Limited Effects On Mainland China’s Overall Hydropower Sector From Severe Heatwaves

On June 24 2023, Mainland China extended the ‘red’ alert to most of Beijing and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and Inner Mongolia, reflecting the severity of the heatwaves that have been affecting the market. As the heatwaves are currently localised in the Northern regions, which depend less on hydropower than the Southern regions, the implications for the overall hydropower sector are expected to be limited. The hotter summers China is experiencing will push the market to strengthen support for other power types, with a focus on non-hydropower renewables expansion and dominating the market’s capacity additions.

Robust Pumped Storage Growth To Reinforce Mainland China’s Renewables Growth

We have recently revised up our hydro-electric pumped storage generation and capacity forecasts for Mainland China, following positive developments in the sector. Mainland China is the top-performing market in Asia for pumped storage, with a total of 36.4GW of capacity as of end-2021. Over the coming years, we expect Mainland China’s hydro-electric pumped storage capacity to expand rapidly. In September 2021, the National Energy Administration (NEA) announced that it aims for hydro-electric pumped storage capacity to reach 62.0GW in 2025 and 120.0GW in 2030.

Green Giants? China’s National Oil Companies Prepare for the Energy Transition

This report, part of the China Energy and Climate Program at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, provides a baseline for understanding how China’s NOCs are responding to climate change. Authored by Dr. Erica Downs, Senior Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy, the report examines the activities the three companies identified as part of their emerging energy transition strategies before Xi Jinping unveiled the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets, and why they didn’t do more.

China Kicks off its Green Electricity Trading

On 7 September 2021, China launched its green power trading pilot – a remarkable step towards energy sector low-carbon transition and moreover, a milestone towards its 2060 carbon-neutral pledge to the world. It is reported more than 250 domestic and international companies participated in the trade on the first day with a trading volume of 7.9 TWh of green power, accounting for over 1% of the total amount of green power China generated in 2020.

Hydrogen energy could be key to carbon neutrality in the People’s Republic of China

Low carbon hydrogen is an important initiative right now for countries around the world and particularly in the People’s Republic of China, one of the world’s largest producers of hydrogen energy. The People’s Republic of China produced about 20 million tons in 2019. One percent or less was renewable energy hydrogen with the remainder being hydrogen produced from fossil energy (70-80%) and from industrial by-products (more than 20%).

China’s Power Sector: On track for transition to clean energy

China’s energy sector is undergoing an unprecedented transition. In a span of five years, from 2015 to 2020, the renewable energy (RE) share in the country’s generation mix grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 28 per cent. Further, over the next five years, is it estimated that another 62 GW of new RE capacity will be added to the country’s capacity mix.

China has a grand carbon neutrality target but where is the plan?

As the world’s largest greenhouse-gas emitter, China will make or break the global quest for climate neutrality by the middle of the century – the only way to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C. Consequently, President Xi’s announcement in September 2020 of China’s new objective to peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 was broadly welcomed. But President Xi offered no detail on how China could turn this vision into reality, and an examination of China’s current plans shows clearly the goal will not be achieved without major changes.

The potential for scaling climate finance in China

China accounts for nearly a third of the global total. Based on its current trajectory, China’s emissions are expected to increase further by 7%-15% by 2030 above 2015 levels, which would more than offset the global decreasing trend. To ensure that China meets its own goals for advancing an ecological society, as well as its stated commitments to the Paris Agreement, climate and green finance needs to mobilize at an unprecedented scale.

Asia’s Climate Optimism

While China’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060 is a good start, electricity demand is already forecast to double by 2050 (from 2017 levels). It therefore must urgently step up its efforts to improve energy efficiency, adopt green and low-carbon energy, expand energy storage, deploy carbon capture and sequestration technologies, and develop a framework for low-carbon urbanization. Many of the needed technologies are already available, and East Asia has the scale to bring down their cost to a level that would enable widespread adoption.

China’s Green Gambit

China’s ambitious climate pledges have drawn praise the world over. But China will demand a high price for its contributions and can be expected to use its promise of international cooperation to undermine any containment strategy that US President-elect Joe Biden’s administration tries to pursue.

The Top 11 Clean Energy Developments of 2020

2020 will be a year to remember. Fortunately, we don’t only have to remember it for a global pandemic, wildfires, an economic recession, racial justice protests, and locust swarms. Plenty of exciting and positive things happened in the energy space throughout the year. Coal is on its way out, bans on gas vehicles are growing and green hydrogen is off to the races.
