UK Energy Trends: Paper

Renewable electricity generation dropped 4.9 percentage points to 46.3 per cent of total generation in the first quarter of 2025. Wind generation provided 28.5 per cent of the total generation, short of the 38.1 per cent provided by gas. Renewable generation capacity increased by 6 per cent on the same period last year, slightly below the average growth rate of the last three years. UK energy production fell 2 per cent last year, mainly due to a fall in gas output stemming from the maturity of the basin, and low wind output from lower wind speeds.

Energy Transition Policies in China

In the past decade, China has accelerated its energy transition significantly. China has added more than 1000 GW of renewable capacity between 2014 and 2023, representing a jump of over 250% in its national renewable energy capacity and accounting for one-third of global investment in clean energy in 2023. However, in terms of reflecting justice in policy sample, this cutting-edge role is missing. Besides limited sample size, it was also the policies’ wording that left many aspects of justice ambiguous.

Global Status of Renewables: Report

The report “Renewables 2025 Global Status Report” by REN21 highlights that in 2024, global renewable power capacity increased 18%, adding a record-breaking 741 GW. Solar PV was the primary driver, contributing 602 GW and accounting for 81% of the total capacity increase. Wind energy followed, adding 117 GW globally. Other renewable sources – whether for power, heat or transport fuels – accounted for only small additions to the global energy supply. China was the dominant contributor to new renewable power deployment, responsible for 60% of the global total. The Group of Seven (G7) nations accounted for just around 14%.

Renewable Energy Finance in Bangladesh: Report

Bangladesh will require up to US$980 million annually until 2030 to meet the goal set out in the Renewable Energy Policy 2025. Post-2030, the country will need up to US$1.46 billion annually until 2040. Policy uncertainty, offtaker and currency risk, land acquisition challenges, and a downgraded sovereign rating may limit capital flows into the renewable energy sector in Bangladesh. A credit risk guarantee scheme, a dedicated green finance facility with scope for prefinance, and an import duty waiver on solar accessories can help accelerate the flow of finance for small-scale renewable energy projects. The country needs to create an enabling environment for investment in utility-scale projects through streamlined policy and regulations.

Türkiye’s hybrid solar potential is more than 8 GW: EMBER

The limited capacity of Türkiye’s electricity grid is negatively affecting the growth of renewable energy capacity. Across both transmission and distribution levels, the available capacity for unlicensed plants in Türkiye is only 0.52 GW. This slows down the realisation of new solar investments in Türkiye, a country with high solar potential. The investment costs required for new grid infrastructure are among the main barriers to increasing capacity allocations. According to TEİAŞ’s 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, 74% of the total 362 billion TL budget planned for the five-year period will be allocated to the renewal and development of the electricity grid. According to the analysis conducted by TEİAŞ and published in its Strategic Plan to assess external factors that may affect its operations and strategic decisions, economic factors have been identified as the second most important element likely to impact the organisation in the future, after technological factors.
