Ignitis Renewables and its strategic partner Ocean Winds, a joint venture of Engie and EDP Renewables, have placed the highest bid in a tender for 700 MW of offshore wind granted by the Lithuanian Government. The duo offered $22.02 million as a development fee to become the provisional winners of the tender. The Lithuanian National Energy Regulatory Council organised the tender with the concept of real-time bidding, in which bidders competed for the highest development fee.
Following the completion of the screening for compliance with national security interests, the final tender winner will be announced early in the third quarter of 2023. Following that, the two companies will establish a joint venture and be granted a concession to utilise a 120 sq km marine area between 30 and 36 km from the Baltic Sea coast of Lithuania for 41 years. The 700 MW project, which is anticipated to start up in 2030, will supply 25 per cent of the nation’s current electricity needs and produce three terawatt-hours of clean electricity per year.
In July 2023, Ocean Winds, a 50-50 joint venture between Spanish renewables firm EDP and French energy giant Engie submitted an application to build offshore wind projects off the coast of Victoria, Australia. Ocean Winds, through its bidding company High Sea Wind, submitted three applications in Victoria’s Gippsland region for wind projects totaling about 4 GW of renewable energy capacity.
