Greenspot secures approval for 500 MW BESS project in Australia

Greenspot, an Australian investment firm, has received approval from the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Planning and Environment for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The 500 MW/1,000 MWh project will be built on the site of the disused Wallerawang Power Station near Lithgow. An investment of about $280 million is anticipated to be needed.

Masdar, an Emirati state-owned renewable energy company, has agreed to develop 2 GW of renewable energy capacity in Tanzania with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO). Abdulla Zayed, the head of Masdar Business Development and Investment, inked a joint development agreement with TANESCO managing director Maharage Chande.

Bechtel to provide planning assistance for Big-T pumped storage project

Bechtel, a US-based engineering firm, has been awarded a contract by BE Power and GE Renewable Energy, a division of General Electric, to provide planning support for a pumped storage hydropower facility in Australia. The Big-T hydropower project is located in south-east Queensland at Lake Cressbrook. It consists of a 400 MW pumped hydro energy storage facility and a 200 MW battery energy storage facility.

EDF Renewables and Budimex plan offshore wind investments in Poland

EDF Group subsidiary EDF Renewables UK Ltd Renewables has inked an agreement with Budimex to make an investment in offshore wind farm development in Poland. On a 50-50 basis, the two companies will focus on the country’s second phase of offshore development. In the second phase, EDF Renewables UK Ltd Renewables and Budimex identified 11 new sites for offshore wind farm development in the Polish Baltic Sea region.

Hitachi Energy to deliver converter stations for SuedLink DC4

Hitachi Energy, based in Switzerland, has been awarded a contract to provide a transmission solution for SuedLink DC4, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between Germany’s north and south regions. TenneT and TransnetBW, two German transmission system operators (TSOs), awarded the company the contract. At each end of the SuedLink DC4 transmission line, Hitachi Energy will install its HVDC Light converter station as per the contract.

DOE offers $26 million to demonstrate that grid can run on clean energy

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $26 million in funding for initiatives that will demonstrate how a combination of solar, wind, energy storage, and other clean energy sources can reliably run the government’s electricity grid. The program is funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is known as the Solar and Wind Grid Services and Reliability Demonstration Program.

Wood to offer design services for floating wind farms in Scotland

John Wood Group (Wood), a British engineering and consulting firm has been awarded the principal designer and pre-feed scope for Salamander, a 100 MW floating wind farm Scotland. Salamander, a joint venture between Simply Blue Group, Ørsted, and Subsea 7, is located 35 km from Peterhead on Scotland’s east coast. Wood will carry out system-level pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) in order to facilitate planning, costing, and risk assessment of a FEED design process.

Blue Elephant Energy (BEE), a German platform for renewable energy, the French private equity firm Antin Infrastructure Partners. BEE, which was founded in 2016, focuses on the acquisition, development, and operation of solar and wind farms throughout Europe and Latin America. Currently, the company has 1.3 GW of renewable energy capacity, which includes 13 wind projects and 67 solar assets spread across eight different countries.

ArcLight affiliate agrees to purchase 185 MW wind portfolio in US

Sequitur Renewables, a subsidiary of ArcLight Capital Partners (ArcLight), has agreed to purchase a portfolio of operational wind farms in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. With affiliates of GlidePath Power Solutions, the company reached an agreement to purchase the portfolio. The portfolio sells power and renewable energy credits into the merchant PJM market and comprises five wind farms with a combined capacity of 185 MW.

Masdar reaches financial close for solar facility in Azerbaijan

Masdar, a state-owned energy company in the UAE, has reached financial close on its Garadagh solar photovoltaic plant in Azerbaijan. The 230 MW solar project is the company’s first in Azerbaijan, as well as the country’s first independently funded solar project. Garadagh will be able to produce 500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power over 110,000 homes.

Cadeler secures contract for Hornsea 3 foundations

Ørsted has given a contract to engineering firm Cadeler to install turbine foundations at the Hornsea III offshore wind farm. Cadeler will utilise its F-Class vessel for the first time to place these foundations after Ørsted makes its final investment decision for the 2.8GW wind farm. The next generation of XL turbine foundations may be transported and installed using the F-Class vessel.

EDPR acquires 70 per cent stake in Kronos Solar Projects 

EDP Renováveis (EDPR), a Portuguese company specialising in renewable energy, invested $256 million to acquire a 70 per cent stake in Kronos Solar Projects, a company based in Germany. Currently, Kronos’ portfolio of solar projects totals 9.4 GW, and they are spread out across the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. The solar portfolio includes projects in Germany that make up about 50 per cent of the total and are in various phases of development.

Iberdrola to purchase renewable project portfolio in Poland

Iberdrola, a Spanish energy company, and Augusta Energy have reached a tentative agreement for Iberdrola to purchase a 98 MW wind and solar portfolio in Poland. The portfolio consists of six solar photovoltaic facilities with a combined capacity of 48 MW and two wind farms with a combined capacity of 50 MW.
