Germany implements plans and strategies to meet its offshore wind targets

Germany is focusing on rapid offshore wind energy development to decarbonise its energy systems as part of its energy transition, also known as Energiewende, and ensure energy security in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has had a significant impact on the entire European Union. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy in power consumption to at least 80 per cent by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035 (compared to around 49 per cent at the end of 2022).

UK signs agreements for six offshore wind projects

In a major milestone for the UK’s energy security and net zero commitments, The Crown Estate announced that it has signed Agreements for Lease for six offshore wind projects which could begin to generate green electricity by the end of the decade and have the potential to generate c.8GW of renewable electricity, enough for more than seven million homes. Signing these agreements represents a significant moment in the UK’s response to climate change and energy security, and further bolsters the country’s thriving offshore wind industry, reinforcing its position as the second largest offshore wind energy generator in the world.

Setting Sail: A new course for offshore wind development in India

With roughly 42 GW of installed wind power capacity as of November 2022, India is one of the leading nations in terms of wind power deployments. Much older and more mature than the solar power segment, wind power dominated India’s renewable energy mix for years. However, of late, the segment has witnessed a significant slowdown in capacity addition and lags far behind solar power, which has an installed capacity of over 61 GW.

Virtual Power Plants

A virtual power plant (VPP) is a collection of small-scale energy resources that, aggregated together and coordinated with grid operations, can provide the same kind of reliability and economic value to the grid as traditional power plants. If homes and businesses can save the grid from going dark for free just based off a text message, imagine what they could do if there were a proper market for VPPs.

Offshore Wind in Europe: TSOs to deploy new solutions for large-scale integration

According to the Marienborg declaration of August 30, 2022, eight Baltic Sea countries – Poland (5.9 GW), Germany (3.8 GW), Denmark (6.3 GW), Lithuania (1.4 GW), Estonia (1 GW), Sweden (0.7 GW), Latvia (0.4 GW) and Finland (0.1 GW) – have set a combined offshore wind target in the Baltic Sea region of at least 19.6 GW by 2030, which is seven times the current capacity. The declaration also recognises the potential for offshore wind in the Balitc Sea basin of up to 93 GW.

UK Offshore Supply-Chain Dilemma: IEEFA Report

The UK government has increased its offshore wind capacity ambitions from 11 gigawatts (GW) of current total installed capacity to 50 GW to be installed over the next eight years. The offshore wind industry shares critical supply chains with the offshore oil and gas sector. Both rely on a limited pool of available ports, vessels and personnel. Stimulating both sectors at the same time will spur competition over scarce resources, driving up costs—which will affect the lower-margin offshore wind sector more severely than the oil and gas sector.

An Action Year: Indian renewables take big strides despite geopolitical challenges

At COP26 held in Glasgow in November 2021, India had announced ambitious goals to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW and meet 50 per cent of its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2030. A year later, it has accomplished about 172 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, clearly showing that the country is moving rapidly towards its Glasgow goals. Meanwhile, renewable energy capacity has reached close to 120 GW as of October 2022 and contributed 13 per cent of the country’s total energy generation between April and October 2022.
