Swedish state-owned power company Vattenfall has announced that its proposed 1.8 GW Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm has received planning approval from the UK Government. After the government authorised the Norfolk Boreas project in December 2021, the business has now received approval for both projects in its proposed Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone.

When fully operational, Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas will produce up to 3.6 GW of renewable energy. The two projects will also help the UK government meet its goal of installing 40 GW of offshore wind by 2030.

In June 2020, Vattenfall decided to invest in the 1,500 MW Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm off the Dutch coast. It is said to be the largest offshore wind project, once commissioned in 2023. The wind farm will consist 140 turbines of 11 MW each. Vattenfall was awarded permits for the construction of the wind farm after winning two subsidy-free tender rounds in 2018 and 2019.

REGlobal’s Views: This is a significant milestone for the massive planned offshore wind project. This project will help Vattenfall expand its portfolio in the highly sought after UK market.
