Walmart has announced the opening of a green hydrogen plant in Santiago, Chile, at its Quilicura Distribution Centre. The project has been developed in collaboration with power generation company, Engie. The project considered an investment of around $15 million. The distribution centre will be allowed to use hydrogen energy cells in place of lead-acid batteries of 200 forklift cranes in its first phase. The company plans to reduce carbon emissions by 17,100 tonnes over a period of 15 years.
In December 2022, RWE Renewables started work on its first green hydrogen project in Chile, with plans to add approximately 835 MW of electrolysis capacity. The project, known as Vientos Magallanicos, will also include 1 GW of wind farms to supply electricity for the electrolysis process. RWE intends to use the plant to generate about 475,000 tonnes of ammonia annually for export to international markets.
