AES Corporation, a US-based power company, and Air Products, a chemical company, have teamed up to develop a green hydrogen production facility in Wilbarger County, Texas. A nearly $4 billion investment will be required for the renewable-power-to-hydrogen project, which will comprise 1.4 GW of wind and solar power capacity.
According to the companies, it will also have an electrolyser that can produce more than 200 tonnes of green hydrogen a day. The renewable energy and electrolyser assets will be jointly and equally owned by AES and Air Products. Air Products will operate as the only off-taker and marketer of the green hydrogen produced at the facility under a 30-year contract. More than 1,300 construction jobs and 115 permanent operations positions are anticipated to be created when the facility starts operating commercially in 2027.
In October 2022, the AES Corporation announced the completion its Luna Battery Storage (100 MW, 400 MWh) and Lancaster Area Battery Storage (127 MW, 508 MWh) facilities in Lancaster, California. In August and September of 2022, respectively, the battery storage facilities were completed and effectively implemented. As per the statement, these two initiatives make up one of the biggest battery storage facilities in California – and the world.
REGlobal’s Views: AES Corporation has been focusing on expanding its portfolio not just in pure solar and wind power projects, but also emerging areas like green hydrogen and energy storage. This large green hydrogen project will help the company to establish its capabilities in this space in the competitive US market.
