EDF Renewables, the renewable energy subsidiary of French energy company EDF, has been chosen by Peruvian consultant Energy Partners to develop, build, and operate a 100 MW/100 MWh solar-plus-storage project for the city of Iquitos, Peru. Electro Oriente, a local utility, has agreed to a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EDF Renewables for the project. The facility, according to the French business, will start delivering power in 2026 at a lower cost than diesel.

The hybrid plant will be connected to a microgrid system that currently serves Iquitos’ 550,000 inhabitants and will generate between 160-200 GWh per year. This will prevent at least 50 per cent of the fossil fuels currently used to generate power in the region from being burned.

EDF Renewables has also inked a 20-year power supply agreement with the municipality of Requena in the Loreto Region of northwestern Peru. Earlier this month, EDF Renewables and OVHcloud, a European cloud solutions provider signed their first renewable PPA. The 15-year agreement involves the delivery of electricity from a 50 MW solar power plant that EDF Renewables will build, own, and operate in France.

REGlobal’s Views: The project is in line with EDF Renewable’s strategy to double their net renewable energy capacity from 28 GW to 60 GW between 2015 to 2030.
