Ørsted, a Danish renewable energy company, has signed an option agreement with Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy to develop an offshore wind site off Scotland’s north-east coast. The companies signed the agreement with Crown Estate Scotland (CES). The deal comprises the construction of a floating wind farm with a capacity of up to 1 GW, which was secured in the latest ScotWind offshore wind leasing round.

The projected Stromar wind farm is 50 km east of Wick, off the coast of Caithness. According to the reports, Ørsted will combine its experience developing and building offshore wind projects with BlueFloat Energy’s experience developing floating wind projects for the proposed project. Falck Renewables will also contribute its Scottish community engagement knowledge to the board.

In collaboration with the Scottish Association for Maritime Science, research on the potential effects of floating offshore wind developments on the marine environment will be carried out. The companies have also begun work on a framework with community ownership specialists Energy4All to allow local communities and residents to share in the financial benefits of offshore wind projects.
