Value of Zero: Performance of SEA’s energy sector

Vietnam targets net zero, but struggles to break coal dependence

At the COP26 climate conference last year, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính unexpectedly announced a target of reaching net zero by 2050. The country also signed the Global Coal to Clean Power Transition statement, in which it committed to rapidly scale up renewables and build no more new unabated coal power plants. This is a major and unexpected pivot for Vietnam. The country has invested heavily in coal power over the past decade and has the most installed coal capacity among Mekong countries, after China.

New Funding Announced for Climate Action in Cities

Adani companies declare energy compact goals as part of COP26

As part of COP26, Indian industry giant Adani Group’s two companies – Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), the solar power development arm, and Adani Transmission Limited (ATL), the power transmission and retail distribution company, announced their Energy Compact Goals, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7). US$ 413 Million Pledged for Most Vulnerable Countries at COP26

In a show of support for those most at risk from climate change, 12 donor governments have pledged $413 million in new funding for the Least Developed Countries Fund during the COP26 climate summit. End of Coal in Sight at COP26
