As signatories to the Paris Agreement, the ASEAN Member States (AMS) are bound to the mandate of article 4, paragraph 2, which is to prepare, communicate and maintain their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Further, as advised in paragraph 9, the NDCs had to be communicated (for parties who have not updated their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions or INDCs) or updated by 2020 (every five years), and the successive NDCs should reflect gradual progression of climate ambitions and actions.

The Covid-19 pandemic adversely impacted the preparation of the NDCs and caused many countries, including some AMS, to submit their NDCs late. Despite this, the AMS have not lost sight of the need to take measures to minimise their carbon emissions. In light of the latest AMS submissions and the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), this brief reviews the information contained in the ten latest available NDCs of the AMS.
