Apex Clean Energy has given Vestas a contract to repower its Downeast Wind project in the US state of Maine. The delivery and commissioning of 30 Vestas V150-4.2 MW turbines is part of the company’s scope of work. Reportedly, the turbines will be serviced by the Danish corporation under a multi-year active output management 5000 agreement.

Furthermore, delivery of the turbines is anticipated to begin in the second quarter of next year, with commissioning planned to take place in the fourth quarter of the same year. The Downeast Wind project will generate sufficient energy to meet the needs of more than 37,000 households annually after its completion. The anticipated cost of the project in rural Washington County, Maine, is more than $235 million.

In May 2023, Apex Clean Energy and Powin collaborated on the development of two new battery storage projects in Texas. The projects, known as Angelo Storage and Great Kiskadee Storage, assisted grid reliability in the Energy Reliability Council of Texas market and have a total capacity of 400 MWh. The 195 MW Angelo solar project was constructed next to Angelo Storage.

REGlobal’s Views: Repowering of wind power projects is gaining traction as older turbines reach end of life or face breakdown. As many good wind sites have already been taken by low capacity turbines, there is significant potential in repowering these sites with newer higher capacity turbines.
