Vestas has secured an offshore wind contract with Equinor for the 810 MW Empire Wind 1 project in New York. The order includes the supply, delivery, and commissioning of the turbines, along with a comprehensive five-year service agreement to ensure optimal performance and long-term support.
This deal involves 54 V236-15.0 MW turbines and marks Vestas’ initial entry into the US offshore market. The V236-15.0 MW turbine boasts type certification for safety and quality. Since its introduction, Vestas has secured over 13 GW of orders and preferred supplier agreements globally, demonstrating its strong position in offshore wind markets.
In July 2024, Vestas secured an order from OranjeWind in the Netherlands to provide 53 V236-15.0 MW turbines for the OranjeWind offshore wind project. This initiative, a 50/50 venture between RWE and TotalEnergies, has a total capacity of 795 MW and a grid connection capacity of 760 MW, with an extra 35 MW to enhance efficiency during periods of lower output.
REGlobal’s Views: Vestas has successively received large turbine orders across various markets in both offshore and onshore wind segments. This large order in the US market for the very first time will help the company to strengthen its position in the fast developing US offshore wind market. This provides relief to the company especially at a time when cost increments and supply chain issues had hurt industry sentiments across offshore wind markets in many parts of the world.
