Egypt signs renewable energy agreements package  

Egypt has formalised a series of renewable agreements covering wind, solar, and battery energy storage system projects. These include plans to establish standalone battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 5,620 MW. One of the agreements grants land usufruct rights for the 900 MW Shokeir wind project in Ras Shokeir. Furthermore, multiple other PPAs have been signed for several renewable projects across the country.

Scatec inks PPA for solar-plus-storage project in Egypt

Scatec ASA has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for the development of a solar-plus-storage project in Egypt. The agreement covers 1.95 GW of solar generation capacity and 3.9 GWh of battery storage. As per this arrangement, Scatec will develop one integrated solar and battery storage hybrid project, alongside two standalone battery energy storage systems.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has announced a partnership with AMEA Power and Kyuden International Corporation of Japan to develop a large-scale solar and battery energy storage system project in Egypt. The collaboration will support the construction of the Abydos II project through Abydos For Renewable Energy. The project will be located in Aswan Governorate in southern Egypt.

Egypt commences construction on ATUM solar manufacturing complex

Egypt has commenced construction of the ATUM Solar integrated industrial complex in Sokhna, with total investments of approximately $210 million. The project is being developed within a 200,000 square metre site at TEDA Egypt, located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The complex is a joint initiative involving JA Solar from China, AH from Egypt, Global South Utilities from the UAE, and Infinity Capital from Bahrain.

EBRD finances 200 MW wind project in Egypt

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a financing package of $74.1 million for the construction of a 200 MW wind farm in Ras Ghareb, Egypt. The funding includes an EBRD senior loan of up to $60.7 million, a concessional loan of $3.38 million from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and an investment grant of $10 million. The project is jointly owned by Infinity Power and Masdar.

Egypt inks agreement for $220 million solar manufacturing facility 

Egypt has signed a land usufruct agreement for the Atom Solar Egypt project in New Alamein City. The project is a partnership between Egyptian, Emirati, Bahraini, and Chinese entities to establish a fully integrated industrial complex across 200,000 square metres in the Sokhna Industrial Zone. It involves developing a 2 GW solar cell production facility, a 2 GW solar panel production facility, and a 1 GWh energy storage manufacturing unit.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) and the Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have signed a MoU to cooperate on green hydrogen development. The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration on green hydrogen from both environmental and economic perspectives. Moreover, it will focus on the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and information between the two agencies.

GameChange Solar secures 1.25 GW tracker deal for solar plant in Egypt

GameChange Solar has inked a contract with CEEC-ZTPC to supply its Genius Tracker 1P Single Row system. The trackers will be supplied for the Abydos Solar PV Plant – Phase II in Egypt. The project has been developed by AMEA Power and built by CEEC-ZTPC. It will combine 1 GWac solar photovoltaic power plant with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system. The project is spread across 20 square km in the Aswan Governorate.

Scatec ASA, through its dedicated project company, Shadwan Wind Power SAE, has inked a USD-denominated 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The agreement is for a 900 MW onshore wind project in Ras Shukeir, Egypt. Furthermore, the signing of the PPA will be followed by wind measurements on the site. The measurements are to be finalised in the first half of 2026.

Egypt and France ink agreement for green hydrogen project 

Egypt and France have inked an agreement to establish an integrated green hydrogen and derivatives production complex, including green ammonia, in the Ras Shukeir region of Egypt. The project will consist of three phases and is expected to draw investments of approximately €7 billion. Furthermore, once operational, the project is expected to generate approximately one million tonnes of green ammonia annually.

AMEA Power to develop 1500 MWh of BESS projects in Egypt

AMEA Power has inked an agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to develop two standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS). These systems will have a combined capacity of 1500 MWh. As part of this agreement, AMEA Power will construct a 500 MWh station in Benban and a 1000 MWh station in Zafarana. Furthermore, this project also consists of substations and grid connections for efficient integration of stored energy into the national electricity network.

ACWA Power inks PPA for 2 GW wind project in Egypt

ACWA Power has inked a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for a 2 GW wind project in Egypt. The investment in the project is approximately $2.3 billion. The project is expected to reach financial close in 2026. Furthermore, this wind project will support the Egyptian government in increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity generation mix to 42 per cent by 2030. It is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 3.5 million tonnes annually.

EBRD and GCF to support 500 MW wind farm development in Egypt

Red Sea Wind Energy has received a loan of up to $100 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) ($50 million) and the Green Climate Fund ($50 million) for the building of a 500 MW onshore wind farm in Egypt. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation and private commercial banks jointly finance the loan, which is covered by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance.
