ITM Power’s subsidiary, Hydropulse, has signed heads of terms with a European oil refinery for a 150 MW green hydrogen project. The project will use ITM Power’s Alpha electrolyser platform to produce green hydrogen at the refinery under a 10-year agreement. Metacon’s fully owned Greek subsidiary, Metacon SA, has received EU funding for its participation in the PUREHY2+ project. The project aims to develop an integrated system that will allow biogas producers to produce high-purity hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide on site. The total project budget is €1.63 million, and it will run for 36 months. Metacon’s share of the budget is €235,022, of which €188,018, or 80 per cent, is covered by EU funding.

tesa has signed an agreement with EWE HYDROGEN GmbH to receive 500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for its plant in Hamburg from 2028 in Emden, Germany. The hydrogen will be used for steam generation and is expected to replace fossil fuels, reducing emissions at the plant by around 6,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. EWE plans to produce the hydrogen at its 320 MW hydrogen production plant in Emden, which is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2027.

Moeve has announced that Hy24 and COFIDES have acquired a combined 29 per cent stake in the Onuba green hydrogen project in Andalusia, Spain. Stargate Hydrogen has signed a €20.6 million EU Innovation Fund grant agreement to expand its green hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing facility in Tallinn, Estonia. The Valencian government has granted €76 million under its FEDER programme to support two BP renewable energy initiatives in Castellón. The energy initiatives will span from 2026 to 2029. Nobian and Air Products have entered into a long-term agreement for the offtake of RFNBO-compliant, certified hydrogen produced at Nobian’s facility in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Europe’s energy system is entering a decisive transformation. Energy storage is therefore increasingly critical. Short-duration options smooth intraday variability and support hourly and daily balancing. But when imbalances last beyond roughly 8–10 hours, direct electricity storage hits technical and economic limits. At that point, only large-scale, long-duration storage can cover overnight, multi-day, or seasonal stress events. Until now, underground gas storage has been the primary source of large-scale system resilience, and it continues to play a critical role. ABO Energy developed, constructed and operated the facility before the acquisition.
