Future of Pakistan’s Electricity Grid: Report

Battery storage adoption is accelerating in Pakistan’s residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, driven by high electricity costs and declining solar component prices. Consumers are combining solar with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to reduce grid dependence, lower energy bills, and improve reliability. This trend is expected to continue as battery economics improve. Pakistan imported an estimated 1.25 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of BESS in 2024. Unmanaged BESS growth could destabilize Pakistan’s national grid by reducing demand and raising capacity payments.

Our customers’ appetite for green energy remains strong: Engie’s Catherine MacGregor

What is undisputable is that our customers’ appetite for green energy remains strong. There are many markets in the US where significant load growth is expected and our conviction remains that renewable and BESS should benefit from their short time to market relative to gas and nuclear. As of now, we benefit from a big level of optionality. Remember, we have a pipeline of 115 GW, 80 GW of this is outside North America. So, if needed, we could allocate capital originally intended for the US into other attractive markets where we are already well established.

Growing Markets for Grid-Connected Battery Storage in India

India’s electricity infrastructure strained to meet soaring demand and experienced its greatest peak power shortfall since 2010. Meanwhile, on the distribution grid, infrastructure also reached a breaking point: nearly 600 transformers failed in Kerala during the summer heatwave. These challenges threaten the affordability and reliability of India’s power system, especially as increasing heatwaves and climate events are expected to persist in the coming years. Fortunately, a solution is emerging: battery energy storage systems (BESS). To achieve necessary BESS deployments, India’s power system regulators and Discoms can recognize and provide mechanisms to monetize the full value of BESS.
