UK launches Great British Grid to accelerate clean power connections

The UK government has announced the creation of the Great British Grid (GBG), a new publicly owned body within the Great British Energy (GBE) that will invest in electricity network infrastructure and support faster delivery of grid projects needed to connect clean power and meet rising electricity demand. GBG will bring together public and private investment to support critical network infrastructure, working alongside existing network operators to accelerate projects and increase competition.

Germany awards 2.5 GW onshore wind projects

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has announced the results of its August 2026 onshore wind auction. A total of 461 bids totalling 5,250 MW were submitted while the auction offered 2,520 MW, making the auction significantly oversubscribed. A total of 237 bids, totalling 2,523 MW were awarded, while 17 bids were excluded. Furthermore, the successful bids ranged from 4.49-4.98 cents per kWh, with the average weighted award price falling to 4.79 cents per kWh, down from the previous auction round, which had an average weighted award price of 5.06 cents per kWh.

Statkraft and Hydro Energi sign 8.8 TWh PPA in Norway

Statkraft and Hydro Energi have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in Norway. The agreement covers the supply of 876 GWh annually from 2031 to 2040, totalling to approximately 8.8 TWh over the contract period. The agreements will supply power to Hydro’s aluminium plants, with deliveries in NO5 electricity price area. The agreement follows two long-term PPAs signed by Hydro and Statkraft in April 2026 for the delivery of 0.9 TWh annually in 2029 and 2030, and 1.3 TWh annually from 2031 to 2038.

Germany awards 2.1 GW solar projects

Germany’s Federal Network Agency has announced the results of the oversubscribed auction held in July 2026 for ground-mounted and non-building solar photovoltaic installations. The auction offered a total capacity of 2,135 MW. A total of 401 bids representing 3,170 MW were submitted, of which 48 bids were disqualified with 261 bids being successful in the pay-as-bid auction.

TotalEnergies has completed the divestment of its 170 MW distributed solar portfolio, comprising mainly rooftop installations across seven European countries (France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Luxembourg). The portfolio has been divested to Amarenco and AMPYR Distributed Energy. The divested assets will continue to be operated by Amarenco and AMPYR Distributed Energy.

Metacon secures funding for green hydrogen project in Sweden

Metacon AB has secured up to SEK 111 million in Klimatklivet funding to develop a 10 MW green hydrogen electrolysis plant at the Hovgården waste management facility in Uppsala, Sweden, covering 55 per cent of the SEK 202 million project cost. The facility is expected to produce around 1,480 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, supplying industrial users and hydrogen refuelling stations across Central Sweden.

It is a four-hour-duration BESS. The project is expected to participate in the upcoming UK Capacity Market auction. The project also benefits from a full planning consent, a secured land option, and allocated Gate 2 status under the UK grid connection reform process.

Amazon and Skyborn Renewables have signed a 600 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm. The project is located in the German Baltic Sea and will add up to 976.5 MW of offshore wind capacity to Germany’s power system. The project will feature 63 offshore wind turbines rated at 15 MW each. Project construction is expected to commence following financial close in summer 2026, with commercial operations targeted for late 2028.

Masdar has agreed to acquire a 49.99 percent stake in Repsol’s 705 MW renewable energy portfolio in Spain in a deal valuing the assets at €849 million. The portfolio comprises 13 wind farms with a combined capacity of 402 MW and 6 solar parks totaling 303 MW, all of which became operational in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. It also includes a pipeline of more than 565 MW of potential hybrid projects involving wind, solar and battery storage.

EBRD finances 400 MW renewables across south-east Europe

Fidra Energy has acquired the Enderby battery energy storage (BESS) project from Innova in Leicestershire, UK.  Once operational, the project is expected to deliver up to 1,025 MW of storage capacity. The acquisition expands Fidra Energy’s UK battery storage pipeline to more than 4 GW. The project received planning consent in May 2025, with a regulatory decision expected in summer 2026.

The contracts fall under Italy’s Energy Release 2.0 mechanism, managed by Gestore dei Servizi Energetici. Industries will procure power at €65 per MWh for three years and ACCIONA Energía will develop new projects backed by 20-year fixed tariff arrangements.

The Federal Network Agency of Germany has released the results of the tenders for onshore wind turbines and solar installations on buildings and noise barriers that closed on February 1, 2026. For onshore wind turbines, a total capacity of 3,445 MW was tendered, attracting 924 bids with a combined capacity of 7,858 MW. Of these, 439 bids amounting to 3,445 MW were awarded contracts, while 24 bids were excluded from the award process.
