The 30 MW Barrow Green Hydrogen project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, has reached final investment decision (FID). The project is being delivered by Green Hydrogen Energy Company, a joint venture of Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power. The will supply c100 GWh of green hydrogen annually to Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing facility in Cumbria.
Furthermore, Plug Power will provide 30 MW of GenEco proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers for the project. The facility will include six 5 MW Plug GenEco PEM electrolysers powered by renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen. The project is expected to reduce natural gas consumption at Kimberly-Clark’s Barrow site by up to 50 per cent and cut carbon emissions by around 18,300 tonnes annually.
Earlier in April 2026, Plug Power was awarded the front-end engineering design contract to supply a 275 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer system for Hy2gen Canada’s Courant project. The facility located in Baie-Comeau, Québec, will support Hy2gen’s production of low-carbon ammonia using electricity delivered through the Hydro-Québec grid.
