Adani Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed agreements to develop the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The agreements include a shareholders agreement, a concession agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan, and an initial understanding on the power purchase agreement. The project will be executed on a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis.

Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with completion targeted within five years of the commencement of construction work. The project reportedly involves an estimated investment of Rs 60 billion for the development of the hydropower plant and associated infrastructure. The preparation of the detailed project report has already been completed.

This is the first hydroelectric project under the MoU signed in May 2025 between Adani Power and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower in Bhutan. Bhutan has outlined plans to expand its clean energy portfolio by adding 15,000 MW of hydropower and 5,000 MW of solar generation by 2040.
