Amazon has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Aer Soléir to develop three utility-scale wind farms: Vermio North, Vermio South, and the Mesokorfi and Koukouras projects in the Peloponnese region. The €496 million project, financed by the National Bank of Greece and the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. These are Amazon’s first utility-scale wind energy projects in Greece.

Amazon has signed four PPAs: two for the Vermio wind farm, which is divided into Vermio North and Vermio South, spanning the Western and Central Macedonia regions, and the other two for Mesokorfi and Koukouras wind farms in the Peloponnese region. Power generation from these wind farms is expected to begin in 2026 and construction has already started.

This initiative supports Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and aligns with Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan to increase renewable electricity generation to over 80 per cent by 2030. The wind farms will contribute to Greece’s transition away from fossil fuels, which currently account for nearly half of the country’s electricity generation.

REGlobal’s Views: Amazon is one of the largest corporate purchasers of renewable power in the world and is continuing to expand its renewables portfolio as it strives to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy procurement by 2025. The company reportedly met 90 per cent of its operational power requirements from renewables by the end of 2022.
