This report “Quarterly Energy Dynamics Q1 2026” published by AEMO provides energy market participants and governments with information on the market dynamics, trends and outcomes during Q1 2026. Geographically, the report covers Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

East Coast Australian energy dynamics from the report indicate that operational demand remained steady, with distributed photovoltaic (PV) growth offsetting underlying demand growth. Renewables supplied a higher share of NEM generation, reaching new Q1 highs. Expanded battery capacity reshaped supply patterns across the day. Average NEM wholesale electricity prices decreased year-on-year, despite periods of high-priced volatility in South Australia.

The report also highlights that the wholesale electricity market (WEM) supply mix shifted further towards renewables, while battery storage reshaped intraday supply patterns while average WEM energy prices remained consistent year-on-year, with lower volatility, and essential system services costs declined for the west coast energy market.
