Avangrid has received full federal approval from the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for the construction and operation of the New England Wind 1 and 2 offshore projects. The two projects will have a combined capacity of 2.6 GW, with 791 MW New England Wind 1 and 1,080 MW New England Wind 2.
This approval of the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) comes after the favorable Record of Decision (ROD) issued by the Biden Administration in April 2024. The approval completes the federal, state, and local permitting process for the 791 MW New England Wind 1 project.
The New England Wind Projects are located around 37 km south of the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, and will begin construction next year. The projects are expected to be online by 2029.
On March 27, 2024, Avangrid had submitted multiple proposals for the New England Wind projects to the Massachusetts-Rhode Island-Connecticut Multi-State Procurement for Offshore Wind in March 2024 and the respective states will announce selected projects in August 2024.
REGlobal’s Views: The United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind deployment by 2030, and this project will help bring the country closer to its goals. However, the country has to address some issues like supply chains and grid considerations for achieving its aims.
