The Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte has signed an agreement with Enterprize Energy, a low-carbon energy producer, to find and develop prospects for offshore wind, green hydrogen, and green ammonia projects off the country’s northern coast.

The collaboration will involve the company identifying and developing potential multi-GW offshore wind projects, as well as assessing potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts and benefits, as well as the economic viability of co-developed desalination and green hydrogen production hubs for both local distribution and export to global markets.

The company will work with a variety of stakeholders to promote the decarbonization of industrial processes, as well as participate in the planning of projected new port facilities in Rio Grande do Norte to support such offshore energy initiatives.

As droughts get longer and more frequent in Brazil, and concerns about the environmental effects of hydropower rise, several Brazilian governments are looking into alternative energy systems that may make use of the abundant wind resource off the country’s coast.

Rio Grande do Norte is presently the top Brazilian state in renewable energy development, with renewable energy accounting for more than two-thirds of total energy generation. Enterprize Energy is actively working on offshore wind projects in Asia, including the Thang Long offshore wind farm in Vietnam and the Hai Long project off the coast of Taiwan.
