There are several pathways to energy transitions towards low-emission economies. New and sustainable fuels can be important decarbonization alternatives for developing countries, while supporting energy security, affordability and sustainability. BRICS countries possess significant potential for the development and deployment of sustainable fuels, including biofuels, low-carbon hydrogen, and synthetic fuels, supported by abundant natural resources, growing industrial capacity, and expanding energy demand. However, scaling up these solutions requires coordinated efforts to address challenges related to financing, technology, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks.

This “Report on New and Sustainable Fuels” published by BRICS Brasil 2025 examines the role of new and sustainable fuels in supporting the energy transition across BRICS countries, with a focus on their potential to contribute to decarbonization, energy security, and economic development. The report highlights national experiences, policy approaches, and emerging initiatives, identifying opportunities for enhanced cooperation among BRICS members. Areas such as research and development, technology transfer, market creation, and standardization are emphasized as key drivers for accelerating deployment. By bringing together diverse perspectives and experiences, this report aims to strengthen collaboration within BRICS and contribute to global discussions on sustainable fuels.
