Corteva Inc. and bp have formed a 50:50 joint venture (JV) company named Etlas to produce crop-based oil feedstocks for use in biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. Etlas will combine Corteva’s seed and crop technology capabilities with bp’s experience in fuel refining and downstream fuel markets to support the supply of biofuel feedstocks to global markets.

Etlas has set a target to produce around 1 million tonnes of feedstock annually by the mid-2030s, with the potential to generate more than 800,000 tonnes of biofuel. Initial feedstock supply is planned to commence in 2027. The feedstock will be used both for co-processing at existing refineries and at dedicated biofuel production facilities. The crops used by Etlas will be grown on existing agricultural land between main food cropping seasons, utilising periods that are otherwise fallow or used for cover crops.

Industry estimates indicate that global demand for SAF could increase from around 1 million tonnes in 2024 to as much as 10 million tonnes by 2030. Moreover, demand for renewable diesel is projected to rise from about 17 million tonnes in 2024 to nearly 35 million tonnes by 2030. Etlas aims to support this expected growth by supplying scalable and consistent biofuel feedstock.
