The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) notified that it has received bids from four international firms for the consultancy contract for the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The company stated that the next phase of the 5 GW field will have a power generation potential of 900 MW. After completion of the project in 2030, it is expected to have a capacity of 5 GW of solar and concentrating solar power (CSP) capacity.
From the DEWA announcement on its website, there is no clarity on whether the next phase of the project would include solar panels, CSP, or a combination of the two. No further information about phase six was provided. The park has 1,627 MW of installed generation capacity which includes the 13 MW first phase, the 200 MW second stage, and the 800 MW third phase, as well as sections of the fourth and fifth slices of the project, which are still under development.
DEWA stated that an additional 1,233 MW of generation capacity, including 700 MW of delayed CSP is on the way for the latter two project sections. That creates 2,140 MW of generation capacity to be added by 2030, 900 MW of which will be part of phase six.
REGlobal’s Views: The completion of this entire solar park of 5 GW capacity will significantly help the country in moving closer to its targets set under the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. The said solar park has attracted interest from across the world and has discovered some of the lowest global prices for solar energy in the previous tenders.
