Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. and NV Energy have announced the successful completion and commencement of commercial operations for the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located in Moapa, Nevada.

Furthermore, it is constructed on the grounds of a retired coal-fired power plant. This grid-connected BESS boasts a capacity of 220 MW/440 MWh, capable of storing renewable energy such as solar and wind power for up to two hours.

Its primary function is to store excess renewable energy and distribute it during peak consumption periods, effectively aiding Nevada’s energy demands during high-use hours. The system, which is now being operated at full capacity by NV Energy, utilises Energy Vault’s integration platform and energy management system (Vault-OS).

REGlobal’s Views: The US energy storage market has received a big boost in the recent months owing to the increasing requirement of grid stability services as the country integrates more and more renewables into the grid. There have been a series of storage projects announcements from the US not just in the dominant solar power states of California and Texas, but also others like Nevada and New York.
