The European Union (EU) has allocated €15.3 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to support preparatory work for the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC) project. The offshore hydrogen pipeline aims to connect renewable hydrogen markets between Finland and Germany. The BHC project has been designated as a project of common interest due to its importance for Europe’s energy transition, energy security, and cross-border market integration.

The allocated funds will be used to conduct preparatory studies, including technical pre-FEED, regulatory and environmental assessments. These studies will analyse the feasibility of BHC as a cross-border hydrogen transmission corridor between Finland and Germany. A potential extension to Sweden will be examined in later phases in coordination with project partner Nordion Energi.

At present, the BHC project is focused on evaluating regulatory, commercial, and technical frameworks. The German segment of the project has already been incorporated into the country’s approved hydrogen core network, which is being developed by GASCADE.
