Fidra Energy has acquired the Enderby battery energy storage (BESS) project from Innova in Leicestershire, UK. Once operational, the project is expected to deliver up to 1,025 MW of storage capacity. The acquisition expands Fidra Energy’s UK battery storage pipeline to more than 4 GW. The project received planning consent in May 2025, with a regulatory decision expected in summer 2026. The project’s final investment decision is anticipated in 2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2029.
The company has already begun construction on its site at Thorpe Marsh, Yorkshire where a 1.4GW/3.1GWh BESS is being developed. Further, a final investment decision is expected soon for another BESS sites at West Burton, Nottinghamshire, which has a capacity of 500MW/1.1GWh. Both these projects are expected to be commissioned by 2028.
In September 2025, Fidra Energy secured financial close for the Thorpe Marsh battery energy storage system project in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, UK. The company has raised about £445 million in new equity from EIG and the National Wealth Fund (NWF), along with £594 million in loan facilities from various international lenders. With a total investment of nearly £1 billion, the BESS project will have a capacity of 1,400 MW/3,100 MWh.
Previously, Fidra had also signed a strategic partnership agreement with Sungrow, under which Sungrow will supply 4.4 GWh of energy storage systems to Fidra. This will support Fidra’s plans to deploy 10 GW BESS across the UK and Europe by 2030. Under the agreement, Sungrow will provide its PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage systems for Fidra’s Thorpe Marsh and West Burton C sites in the UK.
REGlobal’s Views: With UK’s expanding energy storage market, a series of energy storage projects have been announced in the country, that will help in providing grid stability. Companies like SSE Renewables, EDF, and The Renewables Infrastructure Group have already announced large energy storage projects as the country witnesses increasing penetration of renewables. The country is one of the leading storage markets across Europe with massive capacity additions ongoing in the BESS space.
