Frontier Power Energy Holdings has acquired the rights to the Ayr and Busby long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects from Apatura Energy. The projects will provide a combined capacity of 350 MW/2.8 GWh, with the Ayr project planned at 200 MW (1,600 MWh) and the Busby project at 150 MW (1,200 MWh). Both projects are expected to deploy long-duration battery systems supplied by Eos Energy Enterprises, including its Z3 technology platform.
Furthermore, the projects have also received Gate 2 notifications under NESO’s Grid Connections Reform process to support UK’s electricity system and Clean Power 2030 objectives. Frontier plans to advance the projects as part of its growing LDES portfolio and pursue participation in Ofgem’s Cap and Floor regime.
In October 2025, Frontier Power formed a strategic joint venture with an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management to accelerate the development of long-duration energy storage projects across the UK. Under the partnership, Cerberus will provide an initial investment of £44 million, forming the first phase of a broader commitment of up to £159 million to support Frontier’s portfolio of regulated storage assets. The joint venture aims to develop at least 16 Cap and Floor-eligible projects with a combined storage capacity exceeding 20 GWh.
