China has started on its path toward a green and sustainable freight transportation system. However, these policies and targets are due for an update as China develops environmental and transportation strategies for the next five years.

The report “Toward greener and more sustainable freight systems: Comparing freight strategies in the United States and China” has been prepared by experts from the International Council on Clean Transportation and the Transportation Planning and Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation, China. This study compares the United States and China in terms of historical and current freight transportation systems and the underlying macroeconomic factors. It highlights the experiences and lessons that can support China in developing strategies, policies, and targets that suit its specific development context and includes policy recommendations for China at the national and local levels.
