“How Southeast Asia Should Embrace Hydrogen: Energy Security and Climate Change Perspectives” has been published by the ASEAN Centre for Energy.

Key highlights include

  • Enhancing ASEAN Energy Security : The production of hydrogen within the ASEAN region can significantly strengthen the energy security of ASEAN Member States (AMS) by reducing their dependence on fossil fuels imports.
  • Carbon Neutrality Targets : To achieve AMS’ carbon neutrality or net-zero targets that committed by almost all AMS, hydrogen is a viable solution to decarbonise sectors such as steel production and transportations.
  • Growing Global Hydrogen Demand : The demand for hydrogen is projected to grow moderately but steadily until 2030, and then grow faster up to 2050 to meet global climate ambitions.
  • Developing a Regional Hydrogen Economy : While hydrogen production and utilisation have already begun in Southeast Asia, more ambitious targets and carbon capture technologies are needed to develop a regional low-carbon hydrogen economy.
