Newfoundland and Labrador has the natural resources critical to Canada achieving its net-zero target by 2050, and supporting the global effort to decarbonise. Newfoundland and Labrador has numerous competitive advantages, with an abundance of renewable resources and proximity to major export markets that well places the province to be a global supplier of clean energy, in particular green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as ammonia. Harnessing this opportunity will also involve finding opportunities to use green hydrogen domestically to support the Province’s net-zero by 2050 target.
The public and industry stakeholders have highlighted hydrogen development as an avenue for economic development and as a pathway to achieve net zero objectives. The release of the Province’s Hydrogen Development Action Plan is the next step in enabling these opportunities. This three-year plan “Hydrogen Development Action Plan” includes 31 action items in the focus areas of markets, regulation, industry, and training. Through this Plan it will enable Newfoundland and Labrador to be an early mover in the green hydrogen economy.
