Hydrostor Inc, a Canada-based company plans to develop 1,000 MW/10,000 MWh of long-duration energy storage projects in the state of California, United States. This includes major projects, one located in southern Kern County and the other in central California. The two projects combined have an estimated investment of more than $1.5 billion. Project development work such as transmission interconnection, engineering and permitting activities are well underway.

The projects will use Hydrostor’s Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) technology. This technology provides eight to twelve hours of energy storage, instead of the one to four hours that current battery technologies usually offer. The long-duration storage is well suited for a state like California which already has a significant amount of utility-scale renewable energy projects connected to the grid. Regulators in the state of California have identified a need for up to 1,600 MW of such energy storage capacity by 2026.

Hydrostor is a private company founded in 2010 and based in Toronto, Canada which develops utility-scale energy storage facilities. Hydrostor’s near-term growth strategy is centered on executing large-scale A-CAES projects generally comprising 200 to over 500 MW opportunities. This represents over 6 GW and over 65 GWh of deployment potential in the USA, Canada, Chile and Australia, with significant global project potential across many other markets.
