Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their global renewable energy partnership by adding 476 MW of power purchase agreements (PPAs) across Spain and Portugal. With these new agreements, the companies’ partnership has now expanded to 5 countries in total. This includes Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal, securing 219 MW from the Tâmega wind complex which is set to begin construction in early 2025.

The partnership also expanded in Spain with two utility-scale PPAs for a total of 257 MW of solar and wind energy. Amazon will purchase 212 MW capacity from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, Western Spain. Iberdrola has invested approximately €200 million in this project. Furthermore, output from 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos, will be purchased. Amazon has contracted more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola across the world from all its signed PPAs till date.

In November 2024, Amazon inked PPAs with Aer Soléir to develop three utility-scale wind farms: Vermio North, Vermio South, and the Mesokorfi and Koukouras projects in the Peloponnese region. These were Amazon’s first utility-scale wind energy projects in Greece.

REGlobal’s Views: Amazon already has existing renewable energy PPAs with Iberdrola in Germany, the UK and the US. The new PPAs are part of Amazon’s strategy to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. It is already one of the world’s largest corporate purchaser of electricity.
