Iberdrola, a Spanish energy company, has started construction on the 50.5 MW Korytnica II wind farm in Poland. The plant, which is located north of Warsaw in the Mazowieckie region, would increase the company’s onshore wind power capacity in Poland to 163 MW. Iberdrola already operates the 30 MW Zopowy wind farm in the Opole region, as well as the 82.5 MW Korytnica I wind farm.
Reportedly, the company claims that its newest facility will generate enough clean energy to meet the demands of 40,000 Polish households. Under a power purchase agreement, Iberdrola will sell the energy produced by the Korytnica II wind farm to Statkraft of Norway. The agreement will be supported by a contract for differences secured in a auction in Poland. The facility is expected to open in the first quarter of 2022. In Poland, Iberdrola has a portfolio of offshore wind projects with a capacity of up to 7.3 GW.
In January 2022, Iberdrola announced the acquisition of a 50 per cent stake in offshore wind company, Sea Wind. The two companies are set to jointly develop a project portfolio of 7.3 GW going forward. The move marks Iberdola’s entry into the Polish market and is expected to drive the company’s expansion. Further, the company aims to be one of the early movers in the global offshore wind market which is expected to grow significantly in the years to come.
