Kona Energy has secured a capacity market contract approximately worth €40 million for the Smeaton project. This is a 228 MW/456 MWh battery energy storage system project (BESS) situated in East Lothian, Scotland. This was achieved after securing planning consent for the site.

Furthermore, capacity market agreement was secured in the T-4 auction which is a government-backed mechanism ensuring electricity supply during peak demand. The project also benefits from the two ‘Protections’ under the ongoing Grid Connection Reform and Clean Power 2030 plan, with NESO committed to bringing projects online before their Capacity Market delivery year.
