New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded contracts to eight battery storage projects and 13 large-scale renewable energy projects. Together, these projects represent 1.7 GW of new capacity and over $3.7 billion in private investment. BESS projects will add 950 MW of capacity, with durations ranging from four to eight hours while the 13 renewable energy projects will add over 719 MW of capacity and comprise solar, onshore wind, and hydropower. The projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2030.
Furthermore, the BESS contracts include the Lighthouse project in Chautauqua county, Zenobe Burns project in Allegany county, Eastwater project in Monroe county, KCE NY 5 project in Ulster county, Blue Spruce project and Palladium project, both in Bronx county, alongside Holtsville project and KCE NY 37 project, both in Suffolk county. All the eight BESS projects will use lithium-ion technology and were selected through NYSERDA’s first bulk energy storage solicitation from 46 bids totalling about 6 GW.
Additionally, under the renewable energy contracts, solar projects include Flint Mine solar, Hecate Energy Greene 1 and Hecate Energy Greene 2 in Greene county, Greens Corners solar park in Jefferson county, and Rich Road solar energy center in St. Lawrence county. The wind projects comprise Wethersfield windpark in Wyoming county, Chateaugay windpark in Franklin county, Ellenburg windpark in Clinton and Franklin counties, and Canisteo wind energy center in Steuben county while the hydroelectric projects include Spier Falls in Saratoga county, High Dam hydroelectric facility in Oswego county, Diamond Island hydroelectric facility in Jefferson county, and Theresa hydroelectric project in Jefferson county.
