Ørsted, a Danish energy company, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Acciona’s infrastructure division to assess options for large-scale floating wind foundations. The two will look into the mass production of floating platforms with an emphasis on minimising the floating wind levelised cost of electricity and their environmental footprint. In order to support the pipeline of floating wind projects being built in the area by the Danish company, they will collaborate to industrialise the production of concrete foundations and create a European supply chain.
The MoU will also help explore options for the use of carbon-neutral bio-cement, bio-concrete and other materials to support the companies’ biodiversity and carbon-reduction targets. Furthermore, the partnership will bring together Ørsted’s know-how in offshore wind and Acciona’s experience in large-scale project development. They will create foundation models that provide adaptable solutions for offshore wind turbines of varying depths and sizes.
In March 2023, Ørsted and Eversource Energy submitted a combined proposal to build the Revolution Wind II offshore wind farm in Rhode Island, US. The proposal for the 884 MW wind project was filed in response to the state’s offshore wind solicitation. If permitted, the Revolution Wind II wind farm would provide enough sustainable energy to power over 500,000 Rhode Island homes.
