Repower Renewable, based in Venice, plans to develop a large-scale floating offshore wind farm in the Ionian Sea and connect it to Italy’s national grid. The wind farm is located southeast of Calabria’s eastern coast, approximately 61.8 kms from Capo Rizzuto and 74.8 kms from Monasterace Marina. The project is expected to have a capacity of 495 MW and will include 33 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, installed on floating foundations. The wind turbines will be installed over an area of approximately 87 square kms.
According to the reports, Repower Renewable has applied to the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Crotone Port Authority for a 30-year maritime state property concession to construct and operate the wind farm. 66 kV inter-array cables will connect the wind turbines to an offshore substation. The wind farm’s electricity will be transported onshore via a 380 kV export cable system.
Repower Renewable was founded in 2018 by the Swiss Repower Group. The company has more than 15 renewable generation assets in its portfolio, including onshore wind farms, solar installations, and small hydro plants. Repower Renewable was one of 64 developers who submitted expressions of interest to Italy’s Ministry of Ecological Transition last year in order to build floating wind farms in Italian waters.
