Repsol, in partnership with Enagas Renovable, has approved the construction of a 100 MW electrolyser at its industrial complex in Cartagena, Spain. The project involves an investment of more than €300 million and has been recognised as a strategic initiative by the European Commission and Government of Spain under the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). Enagas Renovable holds a 25 per cent stake in the project, and is scheduled for commissioning in 2029.

The facility will have the capacity to generate nearly 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, enabling its use in industrial production processes and contributing to the reduction of conventional hydrogen dependence. The electrolyser will receive €155 million in funding through the Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). Once operational, the project will offset approximately 167,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Additionally, the project is a part of the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Murcia, a regional initiative aimed at building an integrated ecosystem that aligns industrial requirements with hydrogen production. Repsol is the leading producer and user of hydrogen on the Iberian Peninsula, and accounts for 60 per cent of Spain’s total output and 4 per cent of Europe’s consumption. Its industrial complexes currently have the capacity to generate about 360,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually.
