Plug Power Inc. has been selected by Scatec and its partners, OCI NV, Fertiglobe, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, and Orascom Construction as the technology provider of electrolyser for the 100 MW green hydrogen facility to be built at the Egyptian Basic Industries Corporation SAE (EBIC) facility in Ain Sokhna, Egypt. Green ammonia will be made from the hydrogen.

When it comes online, the 100 MW PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) electrolyser will be the world’s largest. As per the reports, Egypt is an ideal location for producing green hydrogen because of its unique renewables profile, which includes high solar and wind loads, as well as its proximity to markets where hydrogen is in short supply. The green hydrogen facility is planned to be completed ahead of schedule in order to be showcased at COP 27 in Egypt in November 2022. In March 2021, Plug Power together with Brookfield Renewable Partners LP, planned to build a green hydrogen production plant utilizing 100 per cent renewable energy from Brookfield Renewable Corp.’s Holtwood hydroelectric facility as part of a previously announced partnership. The plant would be located along the Susquehanna River in south-central Pennsylvania.
