The Scottish Government has approved the construction and operation of 228 MW project Smeaton Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) situated near Dalkeith in East Lothian. The project is part of Kona Energy’s ongoing collaboration with the Electricity System Operator (ESO) and National Grid to address energy constraints and enhance network stability.

In partnership with Zenobē, Eku, and Field, Kona co-authored a proposal for using batteries to reduce the public cost of constraints. Kona Energy, with advisory support from Opus Corporate Finance LLP, will soon seek investment to bring the Smeaton BESS project to market.

In May 2024, RWE announced plans to develop a green hydrogen project in Grangemouth, Scotland. Under the terms of the project, RWE will supply the first hydrogen produced to INEOS Grangemouth. Once completed, approved, and operational, the initial capacity is expected to be up to 200 MWe, capable of producing up to 3.6 tonnes of hydrogen per hour, with the possibility of expanding to 600 Mwe later.
