Toray Industries, Inc. and Siemens Energy K.K., the Japanese subsidiary of Siemens Energy AG, have partnered for the production of green hydrogen from Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) water electrolysers using renewable energy sources. In the partnership the membrane technology will be provided by Toray Industries. The partnership will work towards promoting the installation and demonstration of these membranes in Siemens Energy’s large industrial scale PEM water electrolyser. The resulting green hydrogen will not only cater to large-scale power generation, but also sector coupling such as heat, transport, and industrial applications.

The two companies have been adopted by the Green Hydrogen Project under the Green Innovation Funding Program organized by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. Six other companies including the Yamanashi Prefectural Enterprises Bureau, and Tokyo Electric Power Company will receive the funding apart from Toray Industries and Siemens Energy.

In August 2021, Siemens Energy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) to jointly develop a hydrogen-based industry in Egypt with the capability for export. The agreement builds on a memorandum of intent signed in January 2021 by Siemens Energy and EEHC and it lays the groundwork for long-term collaboration to scale up Egypt’s hydrogen-based sector. The partnership will jointly promote investment, technology transfer, and implementation of projects related to hydrogen production, based on renewable energy in Egypt.

In May 2021, the International Renewable Energy Agency signed a partnership agreement with Siemens Energy to work on the application of technology to advance the transition to renewable energy across the world. The two entities will work together on developing business cases for green hydrogen and promoting heat generation and industrial processes that can decarbonise hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel and petrochemicals.

REGlobal’s Views: Siemens has announced a number of projects and partnerships in the green hydrogen space across the globe. Such partnerships and projects will create lessons and learnings for future projects as various countries move towards hydrogen economy.
