Singapore’s Energy Market Authority has given conditional approval to the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore renewable electricity initiative. The approval was granted to Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries and the designated importer for the proposed project.

The initiative plans to import up to 1.3 GW of renewable electricity into Singapore through a regional power corridor connecting Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. The project will use offshore wind resources in Vietnam along with solar and battery energy storage infrastructure in Malaysia. The project proposes transmitting renewable electricity generated in Vietnam through Malaysia and supplying it to both Malaysia and Singapore, with imports into Singapore expected to begin in 2035.

Earlier, in June 2026, Sembcorp Industries completed the full acquisition of Alinta Energy. The acquisition was completed through Sembcorp’s wholly owned subsidiaries – Sembcorp Energy Australia Pty Ltd and Sembcorp Energy Australia Pte Ltd. The acquisition follows Sembcorp’s announcement in December 2025 to acquire Alinta from Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. Alinta Energy has been under the ownership of Chow Tai Fook since 2017.
