Skyborn Renewables, a German renewable energy developer has filed an application with the Swedish Government for the development of a 2.8 GW offshore wind farm. Called Fyrskeppet, the offshore wind farm will be located north of Örskar in Uppsala County, about 50km from the coast. The project will be powered by a maximum of 187 wind turbines. When completed, the wind farm is expected to generate up to 11 terawatt-hours of clean energy. This is said to equate to 8 per cent of the country’s existing electricity consumption. Electricity demand in the country is expected to more than double in the coming decades. The Stockholm-Mälardalen region is often considered to be the growth engine of Sweden, and within the next decade the increase in demand for energy could outpace the current supply, stated Skyborn.

In May 2023, ABB announced a collaboration with Lhyfe and Skyborn to jointly implement and optimise the SoutH2Port renewable hydrogen project in Sweden. ABB would collaborate with Lhyfe and Skyborn to drive large-scale integration of offshore wind renewable energy production of hydrogen into the power system. ABB would utilise essential expertise to optimise the integration of hydrogen and electricity production across the entire ecosystem, including automation, electrical, and digital technologies, as part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the companies.
