Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a 33.3 per cent equity interest in the Gwynt Glas offshore wind project located in the Celtic Sea, UK. The company has partnered with EDF power solutions UK and Ireland and ESB for the project. The project involves the development, construction and operation of a floating offshore wind farm with a planned capacity of up to 1.5 GW. Furthermore, the consent application for the project is planned for 2028 while the project is expected to commence operations in the late 2030s.
In July 2026, Sumitomo Corporation sold its equity stakes in three offshore wind projects including the Northwind, Nobelwind and Northwester 2 projects in Belgium. The sales of its stakes in Nobelwind and Northwester 2 to existing shareholder JERA Nex bp have already been completed. The company will sell its Northwind stake to Publiwind, subject to regulatory approvals, with completion expected in 2026.
In May 2026, Sumitomo Corporation, through Summit Transition Partners, agreed to invest in multiple large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK. The projects are being developed by Gresham House Energy Storage Fund plc. Additionally, Sumitomo Corporation has also entered into a battery storage partnership with Gresham House Limited.
