EDF, KOWEPO and Masdar secure funding for 1.5 GW solar project

EDF Renewables, Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), and Masdar announced the financial closing of the 1.5 GW AC Al Ajban Solar Photovoltaic independent power producer project in Abu Dhabi. The project company, with EDF Renewables and KOWEPO each holding a 20 percent stake and Masdar holding a 60 percent stake, signed a 30-year power purchase agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company to design, finance, build, and operate the plant.

Denmark aims for a fourfold increase in its annual onshore RES production by 2030 from 12 TWh to 50 TWh. This will be achieved through major energy parks on land, to be developed under the climate agreement on more green energy from solar and wind on land (December 2023). Moreover, the offshore wind (OSW) capacity, which currently stands at 2.7 GW, is expected to increase four times by 2030 (around 12 GW) and 14 times by 2050 (about 37 GW).

Multiple  studies indicate that the use of renewable energy to complement diesel power generation in Maldives would reduce electricity production costs. The Government of Maldives has recognised the prospects of using the country’s large renewable energy resources to lower the cost of electricity generation, increase energy security while reducing import-related financial risks, and reduce the country’s GHG emissions. The report concludes that scaling up the use of hybrid solutions should be seriously explored particularly by SIDS, other isolated locations such as remote communities, as well as industries and mines using diesel-generator-based power systems.
