Eurasian Resources Group to construct $230 million wind farm 

Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), a mining firm with headquarters in Luxembourg, has announced plans to invest around $230 million in the construction of a 155 MW wind farm in Kazakhstan. The wind farm, which spans more than 150 hectares of land near the town of Khromtau, will go into operation in 2024. A total of 300 employments will be created by the project during construction, and 30 additional permanent jobs will be added after it is put into operation.

SSE completes ground investigation for Arklow Bank Wind Park

A team from subsea services company Fugro completed the geotechnical works by boarding DEME ’s DP2 offshore installation vessel, Neptune. The 800 MW project’s development site, which is situated 6–13 km from the coast of Ireland, has undergone investigations at various locations.

Nova Scotia selects five wind projects with 372 MW capacity

The Provincial Government of Nova Scotia, Canada has completed five onshore wind projects that will provide renewable energy to the province for the next 25 years. The five wind projects have a combined capacity of 372 MW. Evergy, a US-based power utility firm, has agreed to purchase the Persimmon Creek wind farm in western Oklahoma for $250 million from Scout Clean Energy and Elawan Energy. Seaway 7 to start inter-array cable works for Moray West wind farm

Subsea 7, based in Luxembourg, has signed a letter of award (LOA) to begin engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) work on the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind facility’s inter-array grid cables. The agreement was signed by the firm and Moray Offshore Windfarm (West). The LOA is currently in the final phases of negotiation and may include the installation and supply of roughly 125 km of 66 kV subsea power cables, as well as all associated cable protection systems.

EDF Group subsidiary EDF Renewables UK Ltd Renewables has inked an agreement with Budimex to make an investment in offshore wind farm development in Poland. John Wood Group (Wood), a British engineering and consulting firm has been awarded the principal designer and pre-feed scope for Salamander, a 100 MW floating wind farm Scotland. Salamander, a joint venture between Simply Blue Group, Ørsted, and Subsea 7, is located 35 km from Peterhead on Scotland’s east coast. Wood will carry out system-level pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) in order to facilitate planning, costing, and risk assessment of a FEED design process.

Sequitur Renewables, a subsidiary of ArcLight Capital Partners (ArcLight), has agreed to purchase a portfolio of operational wind farms in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. With affiliates of GlidePath Power Solutions, the company reached an agreement to purchase the portfolio. The portfolio sells power and renewable energy credits into the merchant PJM market and comprises five wind farms with a combined capacity of 185 MW.

Siemens Gamesa receives offshore wind turbine order in Japan

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has received an offshore wind power order from Green Power Investment for the Ishikari offshore wind power project in Japan. The 112 MW wind power project is located in Hokkaido, Japan, about 5 km from the shore of Ishikari Bay. As part of the agreement, SGRE will deliver 14 of its SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines, each with a 167m rotor and an 8 MW capacity.

France plans to float 1 GW tender for offshore wind farm

The French government announced plans to launch a tender for an offshore wind farm in state waters for up to 1 GW and claimed to have found a suitable location in the Atlantic, west of France. Despite the lack of a clear deadline for the tender, the government revealed that a winner would be chosen in the first half of 2024. It is anticipated that the proposed wind farm will start operating in the early 2030s.

Biden Administration Takes Action to Accelerate Offshore Wind in Gulf of Mexico and Southeast

On July 20, 2022, the US Department of the Interior (DOI) announced next steps for offshore wind (OSW) development in the Gulf of Mexico. On the same day, the Biden administration announced that it was kickstarting OSW development in the Southeast, which has been under an offshore development moratorium. With the clock ticking, BOEM held a competitive auction for two lease areas in the Carolina Long Bay area off the coast of North Carolina and issued the leases to the winners before the moratorium commenced on July 1, 2022.

TRIG to purchase additional stake in UK’s Hornsea One wind farm

The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG), a UK-based investment company advised by InfraRed Capital Partners, has decided to raise its shareholding in the UK’s Hornsea One offshore wind farm. The company will increase its stake in the 1.2 GW project to 10.2 per cent by purchasing an additional 2.4 per cent equity interest from Global Infrastructure Partners. The action follows TRIG’s initial 7.8 per cent equity investment purchase of Hornsea One in March 2022.

Crown Estate approves six offshore wind projects

The Crown Estate of the UK has been granted authorisation to enter into leasing agreements for six fixed offshore wind projects totaling about 8 GW. The action was taken in response to the Crown Estate’s announcement that it will move through with the offshore wind leasing round four plan based on a derogation early in 2022. The six projects that were chosen are spread out throughout the waterways of Wales and England.

Greater Scope for Renewables in ASEAN

Solar and wind generated only 4% of the ASEAN 5’s electricity last year, lagging behind peers like China (11%) and India (8%). Among the ASEAN 5, only Viet Nam (11%) exceeds the world average in solar and wind, which generated 10% of global electricity for the first time in 2021. The rest is still below 5%. The vast potential of clean energy in the ASEAN 5 is unfortunately not reflected in its latest 2030 plans.
